Does fasting help weight loss? This may seem like a strange question, but it really isn't.
Many people have legitimate concerns about this approach, largely because of what a long-term fast does to your metabolism...and what happens when it is over (massive weight gain).
The key word to these problems is "long-term." If you are concerned about long-term fasting to lose weight, you have good reason to be.
Short-term, intermittent fasting is another story, but let's talk about the long-term approach first.

Long term fasting is not good for weight loss for the following reasons:
1. It slows your metabolism. A slow metabolism burns calories at a lower rate, thus encouraging weight gain.
2. It weakens you and depletes your energy. If you want to lose weight, you need strength and energy to do so. What for? For exercise. Exercise burns calories and it is critical for keeping firm muscles that also help burn calories.
3. It is not healthy to do repeated long-term fasts. Losing weight at the expense of your health should not be considered an option.
4. The long-term approach is not sustainable for life. Most people who gain weight easily need a weight loss system that is more of an enjoyable lifestyle that can be carried on for years to come.
Okay, there are a few reasons long-term fasting doesn't work, but what about short-term?

You bet it will! Asking, "does fasting help weight loss" is like asking, "does food cause a tummy ache?" It all depends on how much you eat of what and how fast you eat it.
When it comes to losing weight, the question should be, "How long are you going to fast for how often?" The long-term fast is not a good dieting approach, however, I believe that intermittent fasting done at the right intervals is the greatest, easiest, least expensive, enjoyable and sustainable way to lose weight plan on the planet.
